For peripheral vascular disease. Patients with exertional lower extremity
pain often think they have arthritis from aging when in fact they actually
may have atherosclerotic peripheral vascular disease. An ankle brachial
index and palpation of pedal pulses in the office setting is a simple way to
screen for peripheral vascular disease. These patients have the same
atherosclerotic risk factors as patients with coronary artery disease.
Angioplasty involves the use of a small balloon
on the tip of a catheter inserted into a blood vessel to open up an area of
blockage inside the vessel.
