What is Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring?
Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring (CACS) is a quick and painless test that
uses computer software and a high-speed CT scanner to spot calcium deposits
in the coronary arteries. This is an excellent method for screening for the
presence of Coronary Artery Disease before you have chest pain or other
serious symptoms. This valuable tool produces a score from zero, for low
risk, to 400 or higher for very high risk. The higher the score, the greater
the risk of atherosclerosis (the narrowing of the arteries). An evaluation
of risk factors such as family history of heart disease, smoking, high LDL
or total cholesterol, diabetes, obesity or hypertension in combination with
a cardiac calcium scoring can identify if you are at risk for heart disease
before you develop symptoms.
Don’t wait until it’s too late!
Coronary Artery Calcium Scoring is a screening procedure that can save
your life and it takes only about 10 – 15 minutes. There are no needles,
dyes or injections involved. The $99 procedure is rarely covered by insurance, so Greenville
Radiology will not file insurance claims. We will require payment before we
begin your scan. A radiologist will interpret the test and consult you on
the results.
